Blackjack card values decide every hand you play, and one miscount costs more than any single bet. The rules are short: count the cards, stay at 21 or under and beat the dealer’s total. Live blackjack tables sit in the Live tab, so open JILIPARK’s live casino lobby and check a table’s info screen for its exact rules.

2 to 10Face value

Because jack, queen, king and the ten all count 10, 16 of the 52 cards in a deck are worth 10. A starting hand of ace plus any ten-value card makes 21, called blackjack.

Soft hands and hard hands

A soft hand holds an ace counted as 11, and a hard hand does not. Ace and 6 is soft 17, and it cannot bust on one more card because the ace can drop to 1.

  1. Add the cards with every ace as 11.
  2. If the total is over 21, count one ace as 1 instead.
  3. If an ace is still counted as 11, the hand is soft. Otherwise it is hard.

Worked example: ace, 6 and 9 first make 26, so the ace becomes 1 and the hand is hard 16.

Blackjack hit or stand

The usual basic-strategy guide for blackjack hit or stand uses your total against the dealer’s up card.

Your handUsual play
Hard 8 or lessHit
Hard 12 to 16Stand against a dealer 2 to 6, hit against 7 or higher
Hard 17 or moreStand
Soft 17 or lessHit

These are general guidelines, not a guarantee of winning.

Problem

You cannot decide on a hard 16

Fix

Look at the dealer’s up card. A 2 to 6 means the dealer is likely to bust, so stand. A 7 or higher means the dealer likely makes a hand, so hit.

Blackjack dealer rules

The blackjack dealer rules are fixed, so the dealer never decides.

  1. The dealer shows one card face up and keeps one hidden.
  2. Players act first, one seat at a time.
  3. The dealer turns over the hidden card and draws until the total reaches 17.
  4. At 17 or more the dealer stands, and the closest total to 21 wins.

A few tables also hit soft 17, and that detail, along with the blackjack payout, is printed on the table’s info screen.
